Hatton art - pastels

French was cancelled last week due to children being ill so we went to the Hatton gallery instead for the home ed art session. The children were shown how to use pastels and how the colours can be blended together. Harry has recently been using some oil pastels at home too and he has enjoyed them.

He made leaf pictures by drawing round leaf shapes and using different shades.

Hatton Art - recycled materials

The children were shown a permanent artwork on display at the gallery today - Merzbarn Wall by Kurt Schwitters, which is partially made from recycled materials and then they made their own art inspired by the piece and/or using various recycled materials. Having looked up the Merzbarn Wall at home we found it is considered a work of international significance and was the last piece created by the artist in 1947-48.


Harry used corrugated card and tissue to make his own version of a painting in the gallery called The Trees Fight Back, which showed cars being pursued by trees

He also made a 'fancy plate'

And a flower picture which he said is a present for me :-)

Hatton Art - Greeks

We enjoyed a semi-led art session today with other home educating families. The sessions run monthly, usually at the Hatton Gallery in Newcastle, and this was our first one - we will definitely be going again. 


We looked at Greek art today in the Greek gallery of the Great North Museum. We looked for depictions of warriors and mythical creatures, then created our own shields and pots using Greek imagery. Harry really got into this and was busy and interested for the whole hour. These were his creations

He liked the Medusa pictures (hence he used two!) but we hadn't read the story of Medusa before so we spent an hour this afternoon reading all about Perseus, Helios and Odysseus in our Greek Myths book. We bought it after exploring the Greek loan box, when Harry was very interested in Hercules and I really like it. Harry would have kept reading but we had the small matter of Peter getting bored to deal with!
